Senior Project

Lachlan's senior project is a disseration regarding the magical fluency of words, gestures, and wand patterns and how different magical mediums work better with different types of spells. While using a wand is widely considered to be the most accessible method for casting magic (and is therefore the most common), his aim is to establish that this is because the typical structure of spells lends itself more easily to a wand and that alterations in the way spells are constructed could make them more conduvice to other forms of casting. Specifically, he is focusing on magic performed only with words (which is considered to be an ability only exceptional wizards possess) and magic performed with gestures of the hands (which is a practice not typically seen in western magical philosophies). While most of his project will focus on research into the history of magical practices, the differences in magical practices among regions, and hermetical theory, he will be supplementing this with a practical experiment/presentation. He will take one simple spell (Avifors), break it down into its fundamental parts, and then create a new spell (with the same function) that is more conducive to being cast without a wand, taking notes about what seems to help and hinder these practices and any significant patterns that emerge throughout this research. |
